Local 295 Wins Certification at Regina’s Globe Theatre

The Labour Board of Saskatchewan recently issued a decision allowing Local 295 to certify the Globe Theatre.  The Globe is the province’s oldest theatre company and has two separate stages; a 406-seat theatre-in-the-round and a 100-seat black box space.

On March 4th, Local 295 filed an application for certification with the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board.  The local was seeking to certify all production employees of the Globe Theatre.  The employer fought the certification by attempting to both flood the list of employees and to exclude all department heads on the basis that they were managerial.

The Labour Board issued its decision on September 27th.  The decision found in favour of Local 295 and rejected the employer’s attempt to disqualify the five department heads.  The Board also ruled against the employer  trying to add six prop builders who had worked for the theatre, in a limited capacity, for a number of months  prior to the application being filed.

With the Board’s decision, a count of the votes was the only issue outstanding.  The ballot box was unsealed on October 7th and, in a landslide victory for the local, the employees voted in favour of union representation.   The Board issued its decision on the certification application on October 13, granting Local 295 the right to represent all production employees at the Globe.  The local, which has supplied stagehands to venues all over Regina since 1913, is thrilled to be representing employees at this iconic Saskatchewan theatrical venue.
