The 2023 IATSE Member Census is a critical initiative to gain accurate, anonymized, aggregated, and up to date statistics regarding our membership across the United States and Canada.
The insights gained from the Member Census will be used to empower us to better advocate for our members’ rights and interests, and ensure future actions reflect the union’s membership.
The Member Census opens July 10, 2023
For purposes of counting and understanding the membership, the Member Census will ask questions that will include age, gender, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, disability, education, income, insurance, etc.
To also understand the membership by areas, there will be questions such as local number, zipcode/postal code, work sector, work classification, years with the union, etc.
The 2023 Member Census will be sent to all current IATSE members across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
People who are on Honorable Withdrawal, people who have not yet been sworn in (permit workers, overhires), and anyone who has been expelled are not permitted to take the Member Census at this time.
The research team at The Worker Institute at Cornell University’s School of Industrial Labor Relations (ILR) has been selected to conduct the 2023 Member Census. The Cornell Worker Institute has a long history of training labor leaders and conducting research for unions.
The Member Census is mandated by delegate convention action at the 2021 IATSE Quadrennial Convention.
Your participation will give us a starting point enabling a much greater understanding to be able to strategize for secure work and better standards. Without your participation, your voice and needs will not be reflected in the Member Census.

Cornell University’s Survey Research is managing the data.
The IATSE is partnering with Cornell University’s Worker Institute to provide locals with tools and resources to assist in spreading information about the Member Census and to obtain the largest participation effort from members possible in order to present the most accurate results.
The accuracy of the 2023 Member Census is dependent upon the membership’s responsiveness to and participation in the Member Census. Your support in this effort is crucial to ensure that the results are representative, and you are counted.
The information gathered from the Member Census will provide locals and the international the most current and accurate membership data that can help inform planning, decision-making, bargaining, organizing, political and legislative actions, and other union initiatives.
During the first week of July, members will receive an email notice from IATSE with a notice that the Member Census email is coming from the Cornell University’s Worker Institute in the next few days.
