The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) reached the end of scheduled bargaining dates for the Hollywood Basic Agreement on Thursday. While the parties did not reach a tentative agreement, talks remain ongoing with further dates to be scheduled as soon as next week.
The Hollywood Basic Agreement is the umbrella contract that covers roughly 50,000 behind the scenes film and tv workers primarily located in Los Angeles, Calif., across IATSE’s 13 West Coast Studio Locals.
Thus far negotiations have largely been productive, with the Basic Negotiating Committee and the studios reaching consensus on a number of issues.
The benefits portion of the agreement, related to the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plan (MPIPHP), is being negotiated jointly by representatives of IATSE’s 13 West Coast Studio Locals, as well as representatives from IATSE Local 52, IATSE Local 161, The Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839), the Hollywood Basic Crafts, including Teamsters Local 399, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 40 (IBEW), Laborers International Union of North America Local 724 (LiUNA!), United Association Plumbers Local 78 (UA) and Operating Plasterers & Cement Masons International Association (OPCMIA) Local 755.
International President Matthew D. Loeb stated, “I want to thank the Basic Negotiating Committee and our union allies for their strength, solidarity, and insight throughout this process. I remain hopeful that our work will result in a tentative agreement that members will want to ratify.”
On Saturday June 1, the IATSE Area Standards Negotiating Committee and the AMPTP similarly did not reach a tentative agreement in the second of two scheduled weeks of talks regarding the ASA. The ASA covers 23 local unions and around 20,000 film and tv workers across the U.S. excluding Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Chicago. For those contract talks, the parties similarly agreed to schedule additional bargaining dates later in June.
