The IATSE won the right to represent freelance sports broadcast technicians employed by Fox Sports New York (FSNY), it was announced by Thomas C. Short, International President. The election results were 75 in favor of the IATSE, 11 in favor of the IBEW 11, 4 in favor of no representation. The election was held July 25, 2002
The election was the result of a RC Petition filed on behalf of the freelance workers on May 24, 2001. Subsequent to the filing of the petition, IBEW filed charges with the AFL-CIO claiming that they had a binding contract covering the same group of workers with a crewing service that handled scheduling and payroll. The IBEW further alleged that the IATSE was raiding their jurisdiction. The AFL-CIO Impartial Umpire ruled that FSNY was the genuine employer and the elections for representation should go forward.
The 13 month lapse between the filing of the petition and the conduct of the election resulted from litigation surrounding the IBEW’s allegations.
