IATSE Local 415 of Tucson, AZ won the right to represent freelance workers with US Expo, an exhibition and display company, International President Thomas C. Short stated. The latest organizing victory was the result of an April 15, 2005 NLRB ruling compelling the company to agree to a “card check” of all freelance workers who service tradeshows and exhibitions.
When the card check was completed, the IATSE prevailed by an overwhelming majority and US Expo agreed to recognize the IATSE as the bargaining representative for the workers. These events formalizes an unofficial relationship between IATSE Local 415 and US EXPO that has existed for several years. Prior to the forced card check, the company had not been willing to recognize or bargain with the Local for worker representation. Contract negotiations are scheduled to begin between the company and union during the week of May 16, 2005.
“The IATSE will continue to organize companies one by one,” International President Short stated. “Our members deserve health and pension benefits, safe working conditions and fair wages and our goal is to see that happen.”
