A message from the IATSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee in response to the recently released police footage of the murder of Tyre Nichols by the Memphis Police:
We are truly horrified by the awful footage of Memphis police brutally attacking Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop. The shock reverberates amongst us all and at this time we send deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Tyre, especially his young son. His murder reminds us of how far we have yet to go to recognize the humanity of our BIPOC Sisters, Brothers and Kin. The use of video footage to prove the grotesque brutality of law enforcement in murders like this as well as the release of trauma-inducing videos have done nothing to curb or eradicate the way in which the police departments across this nation carry out “routine” inquiries with the public. As members of the labor movement, we must work together to not only demand justice for Tyre Nichols, but also to implore our elected leaders to take heed and address the systemic issues head-on that allow for these continued acts of violence.
Until we face the racial injustice that is prevalent in our communities and our workplaces we cannot heal, we cannot move forward.
In Solidarity,
IATSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
