IATSE Applauds NY Elected Officials for Urging Atlantic Theater Company to Resume Good Faith Negotiations

NEW YORK, NY — The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) commends Assemblymember Tony Simone, Congressman Jerry Nadler, State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, State Senate Labor Chair Jessica Ramos, Assembly Labor Chair Harry Bronson, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, and Councilmember Erik Bottcher for calling on the Atlantic Theater Company to return to the bargaining table and resume good-faith negotiations with IATSE. This growing political pressure reflects widespread support for the Atlantic Theater’s workers, who were forced to strike in protest of management tactics believed to be unlawful, including issuing non-negotiable demands in negotiations and otherwise stalling the process. These elected officials have made clear that the best path forward for both parties—and for the audiences who love Atlantic Theater—is for management to return to the table and engage in real, good faith negotiations.

The stakes for the Atlantic Theater losing support of elected officials are high, as the company received over $4.3 million in federal funds through the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) and $205,000 in grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Despite receiving these public funds, ATC management is using their budget to hire expensive union-busting law firms rather than collaborate on a fair contract that addresses workers’ needs, including industry-standard healthcare coverage.

IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb said, “The production workers have waited 17 days for the Atlantic Theater to provide a counterproposal, so this letter is timely. I sincerely thank these elected officials for recognizing the right of workers to stand together for fair treatment, and for recognizing the importance of returning to good faith negotiations so the Atlantic Theater can reopen as soon as possible.”
