Another Organizing Success for IATSE Local 56

MONTREAL, QC – The Quebec Labour Board has issued a certification to IATSE Local 56 for stagehands at Théâtre du Vieux-Terrebonne in Montreal. The International of the IATSE supported the local through the hiring of an organizer for the campaign and through financial assistance from the International Defence Fund. Local 56 worked diligently toward this goal and the new members are looking forward to working under a collective agreement.

Théâtre du Vieux-Terrebonne, better known as TVT, is one of the largest multidisciplinary presenters in Quebec. It boasts two separate theatres, the 656-seat Salle Desjardins, for more traditional theatrical productions, and the Salle du Moulinet, a 110-seat cafe-bistro style venue, used for innovative and more intimate productions.

This organizing success comes on the heels of Local 56 concluding a first agreement with the City of Châteauguay, which is an off-island suburb of Montreal. That agreement covers all theatrical venues in the City, as well as festivals and concerts in public areas. The City of Châteauguay certification took place in 2012 and the new agreement is up for ratification soon by Local 56 members.
