Carl Mulert served as the National Business Agent at United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829 for six years, from 2020 to 2026. Prior to his election as NBA, he led USA 829’s Live Performance department for ten years. In January 2024, he was elected to the IATSE General Executive Board and in 2025, at the 70th Quadrennial Convention, he was unanimously re-elected as the 13th International Vice President, the first LGBTQIA+ individual to serve on the IATSE General Executive Board.

He has worked in the entertainment industry for 46 years in a sustained career that has focused on supporting artists, technicians and craftspeople – and providing better working conditions, healthcare, and a dignified retirement for those individuals and their families. A staunch proponent of DEI, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment initiatives, he is committed to introducing stronger provisions in all Union contracts and policies to dismantle gatekeeping and discrimination in all forms and to protect the membership and union staff from harassment and bullying.

He also serves the broader IA community and his union kin through his work as Co-Chair of the IATSE Pride Committee; Co-Chair of The Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds; as a Labor Trustee of the IATSE National Benefit Funds; and through his work on the Executive Council of the New York State AFL-CIO.

Carl lives in New York’s Hudson Valley with his husband John of 32 years.
