James J. Claffey, Jr. has been an I.A.T.S.E. International Vice President since 2017. He also serves as Chairman of IATSE District 10. He was born on January 24, 1964 and is the proud son of Local One Member, James J. Claffey Sr. and has five brothers that are all members of the IATSE. He is married to Stephanie Simon, NY 1 News Anchor, Arts & Entertainment Reporter and Producer and the proud father of three beautiful children, Bailey, Michael and Madeline. He is a graduate of both the Cornell University Labor Studies Certificate Program and the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.
Vice President Claffey worked throughout the jurisdiction of Local One since 1982 in venues including Radio City Music Hall, the City Center 55th Street Dance Theatre, Madison Square Garden, CBS-TV, ABCTV and various Broadway theatres. He began his career as an Officer of Local One in 1996, serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees until 1998, at which time the membership elected him to the position of Theatrical Business Manager, an office he was then re-elected to in 2001. In May of 2004, Vice President Claffey was elected the first full time, salaried President of Local One, and has since been re-elected to the Office of President for five more terms.
As President of Local One, Vice President Claffey is the Chairman of all Union Committees, a Trust Fund Trustee and Co-Chair of the Local One Pension, Welfare and Annuity Funds, as well as Co-Chair of the Local One New York City Stagehands Political Action Committee. Vice President Claffey is a member of The Actors Fund Board of Directors, the Advisory Board of Spotlight on Broadway, Vice President of the New York City Central Labor Council, and a member of the New York State AFL-CIO Executive Committee.
