D. Joseph Hartnett (Joe) was appointed Co-Director of the Stagecraft Department in February 2021. Prior he was the Assistant Department Director of the Stagecraft Department since November 2013. Joe has been an International Representative in the Stagecraft and formerly, the Organizing Department, since 2009. In March 2018, he was elected as the Co-Chair of the Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds (COBUG).
He is a former business agent and member of Local 3 Stagehands in Pittsburgh, and President and member of Local 862, Treasurers and Ticket Sellers in Pittsburgh. He served as Business Agent for Local 3 from 2006-2009. He has been the President of Local 862 since 2009. He was a founding Chair of the IATSE Young Workers Committee.
Joe was the Master Electrician at the Pittsburgh Public Theater and union steward from 1999 through 2006. He toured Europe as the Head Electrician with the opera Porgy and Bess and worked on films shot in Pittsburgh such as Wonder Boys and Dogma. He also served as an adjunct professor in the Theater Department of Duquesne University teaching Technical Theater.
The Stagecraft Department represents over 270 IATSE Local unions that encompasses all live event entertainment. Everywhere that live performers entertain audiences, workers represented by the IATSE Stagecraft Department are behind the scenes. From Broadway theaters, opera houses, dance centers, regional theaters, seasonal outdoor amphitheaters, arenas, concert halls, parks, television awards venues and stadiums.
