IATSE Local 161 secured the agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on August 4, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognition was achieved through a voluntary card check, with a strong majority of eligible workers signing cards in support of representation. The agreement was negotiated to bring East Coast workers&#8217; wages and conditions into line with those secured by their counterparts in Los Angeles under IATSE Local 871.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Script Coordinators and Writers&#8217; Room Assistants work at the center of television and film production, operating physically in writers&#8217; rooms, remotely, and on production sets. Despite the essential nature of their work, workers outside the Los Angeles area have labored without union protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workers first began conversations with Local 161 about potential coverage nearly eight years ago. Those discussions stalled multiple times before gaining renewed momentum in the wake of the 2023 WGA strike, during which many Script Coordinators and Writers&#8217; Room Assistants lost their jobs and healthcare. That experience galvanized the workforce. Over the past year, Local 161 launched a card signing campaign with the assistance of IATSE International Vice President, Department Director Motion Picture &amp; Television Production, Michael F. Miller and IATSE Assistant Department Director Chaim Kantor, working directly with the AMPTP to execute a card check agreement and negotiate a first contract in short order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re proud and thankful to be joining Local 161,&#8221; said the organizing committee. &#8220;This campaign started back in 2018, stalled several times, but picked up in a meaningful way last year, largely due to a dedicated group of Script Coordinators and supporters on the 161 side. We made our case for why Script Coordinators and Writers&#8217; Room Assistants on the East Coast deserve the same protections our colleagues have in Los Angeles, collected the necessary support from eligible workers, and today we have an agreement with the AMPTP.
